5 Ways To Trick Your Inner Critic
Let's talk about the oppression of our minds. How our minds end up screwing everything up, when we don't want it to.
In my own life, I know that my worst foe is my inner critic. Maybe you've dealt with this inner critic. This voice that seems to pop up out of nowhere, all of a sudden you feel like you're on fire, and BOOM.
You burst, and you don't know what happened.
What is this inner critic? Well, it's really just your ego trying to protect you from something that it's not sure about. Anything that you do that is a little beyond your comfort zone is the perfect opportunity for that inner critic to creep in.
These unconscious tapes are playing over and over again in your mind like a tape recorder. A lot of people will tell you, "Oh, just ignore it!" Yeah, well how does that work, right?
How do you just ignore it? It's not possible. For instance, my inner critic used to come up most when I was auditioning for big musicals in NYC. I'd get in the room and start shaking. Pretty embarrassing!
Why? I was trying to ignore the inner critic. I was trying to ignore the nerves. Nope. Doesn't work. Those nerves are real, it's how you use them that counts.
The second thing that doesn't work, is trying to fight it. Trying to beat it out by saying, "Oh, no. I'm not nervous. No, I'm not nervous. I'm not nervous!!!!!"
"There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." -- William Shakespeare
Think of a bird trapped in a cage. If it wants to get out, it's going to rattle that cage more and more and more. Sometimes you just have to open up the cage and let the bird out.
So, how do we do that?
We have to give it a new brain! We have to give this inner critic a new way of thinking. This critic in your brain needs a new pattern.
You have to interrupt the brain, put something else in, and change the way that your inner critic sounds. Instead of drinking the gasoline of negative self talk and lighting yourself on fire, I want you to light your inner critic on fire so you can live your light.
I'm going to give you five ways to bust through this inner critic, and they get a little more fun as you go.
1. Observe your thoughts
The first one comes from the Buddhists, and they always say to watch your thoughts as if they are clouds passing by.
Now that's great, but it's also really hard; especially if you're in this high pressure cooker situation where you can't passively watch your thoughts go by, right? You have big things to accomplish. And often they have to be done quick and well.
Here's another way...
2. Connect to the present
Come back to the present moment. Say, "I'm here." Just come back. Come back to the now. These thoughts are taking you out of the present moment so you don't know where you are anymore. Once you get untangled from your mind, you're more free to think clearly.
If that doesn't work, which sometimes it doesn't...
3. Slow your phrase down
Normally, there's a phrase that's coming up for your inner critic. Mine is normally, "I'm not ready. I'm not ready. I'm not ready." Eight percent of the time this phrase is really fast.
Think about your phrase right now. Say it in your head. It's probably really fast, right? That gives your body a certain neurological response -- so slowwwwww it down. "I'm (big pause) Not (bigger pause) Ready (biggest pause)."
It sounds kind of funny, right? It will make you laugh. That's the point! That starts tripping up the wiring in your brain. It's like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. Why are we going slow all of a sudden?"
Now if that doesn't work...
4. Give it a funny voice
What's your favorite cartoon character? Let's say it's Mickey Mouse. So put on your best falsetto, "Hey folks! I'm not ready!" That will really crack you up if you're a guy! Again, you're tripping up the brain.
Finally, if that doesn't work...
5. Break your state
Do something ridiculous! Break your physical pattern, somehow. Maybe you jump up and down and start screaming, "I'm amazing! I'm amazing! I'm amazing! Yeah!" Something like that!
"Our greatest foes, and whom we must chiefly combat are within." -- Cervantes
So there you have it, five ways to bust through your inner critic. This is really important because I want to see you do those things that you're meant to do. The main thing holding us back is this voice inside of our heads that produces fear.
Anything is achievable if you really put your mind to it, but only if your mind doesn't put you to it.
So, my questions for you are:
1.) How does this inner critic show up in your life?
2.) How is this inner critic holding you back?
3.) Which technique can you try to light fire to that inner critic?

Breaking Through This Year
Ready to feel first class?
I was sitting in first class flying back to New York from Ohio, thinking, “Wow, this is what it’s like.” And no, I didn’t pay for it!
This is what I did: I noticed there were open seats and I just plopped down. I wanted to see what would happen.
To my surprise, no one said anything. No one was confused.
That’s kinda what a breakthrough is like, you’re sitting there thinking, “is this really happening?! Is that all I had to do?”

To my surprise, no one said anything. No one was confused.
That’s kinda what a breakthrough is like, you’re sitting there thinking, “is this really happening?! Is that all I had to do?”
If you remember a few months ago I told you how I lost my external hard drive the last time I was flying. Meaning, I lost the ENTIRE program that I designed for you. Well this time I sat in first class smiling...
The 7-Day Breakthrough is finished.
That’s kinda what a breakthrough is like too, “Man, member when I was struggling to put this thing together?! Now, I have to re-do it!!!!!! F***!!!
BUT- soon that turns into, “It’s done!” And you can sit in first class and smile.
It was good I lost it though… perhaps divine…
Cause member when I asked you what your #1 question about having a breakthrough was?
Well, I got hundreds of responses! Thanks to your questions I was able to re-do the program and tailor it to your needs.
But I really wanted to address these questions first in my new podcast… Listen below...
After so many questions came in, I boiled it down to these most common concerns (is one of them yours?)…
How do I take that first scary step?
How do you fight the safety of staying in something not right but it's "secure" with the desire to leap?
Where do I start and by what process do I condense these endless possibilities to arrive at a conclusion?
How can I do it differently this time and make it work?
Once you've come to believe in your dream, what is the secret magic word for conjuring up the time and money to manifest it?
How to find the time (as a full time working mom of 2) to do meaningful self-work?
Listen to the surprising answers so you can avoid the confusion and get clear.
You don’t need a resolution this year- you need a breakthrough.

Reflect, then resolve.
If you’re like me, or 45% of Americans who make New Year’s resolutions, you’re probably writing down all your new goals for 2016.
“This year I’ll spend less and save more. I’ll spend more time with family. I’ll get organized.” You know how it goes…
You and I are both good at that part. But only 8% actually achieve their resolution, yikes! Learn how to change that in this blog.
If you’re like me, or 45% of Americans who make New Year’s resolutions, you’re probably writing down all your new goals for 2016.
“This year I’ll spend less and save more. I’ll spend more time with family. I’ll get organized.”
You know how it goes…
You and I are both good at that part. But only 8% actually achieve their resolution, yikes!
I was thinking, how come every year I say I’m going to buy Kip’s castle but then somehow I never quite have the 10 million it would require?! What gives?!
So instead of berating you about how you need to stick to you goals, stay strong, and persevere, I’m not going to do that.
Instead, I want to take a gentler approach to stating this year. Cause you know what, I’m sick of people yelling at me about sticking to my goals, maybe you are too?
The problem is NOT that you’re incapable of achieving your goals, the problem is you forget how capable you really are!
When the ball dropped I immediately texted my girlfriend (she’s in Columbia without me L ) “Happy 2017!” Obviously I got a little ahead of myself (I literally thought it was 2017). I’m always somewhere in the future.
And I realized… I NEVER reflect on all the amazing things that happened THIS year.
So I want to do that with you today. Cause if we can reflect and remember all of the memorable moments of 2015 then it’s going to be A LOT easier to get motivated for 2016!
Write your answers to the New Years Process in the comments below so I can see what you’re thinking.
The New Years Process:
Step 1: Write out 10 amazing things that happened for you this year!
So I’ll go first…
- Starting SoulFeed and hitting “New and Noteworthy” on iTunes.
- Moving in with my girlfriend to a new apartment (that was scary!).
- Growing my businesses 10x and working with private clients.
- Expanding my network of friends and colleagues (they’re epic peeps).
- Deepening my spiritual practice.
- Taking 3 mini vacations during the year (a month in the mountains was by far the coolest.)
- Committing to San Diego and moving out of New York City.
- Landing a literary agent (in 4 freakin’ hours, what?!).
- Developing a consistent meditation and gratitude practice.
- Connecting with you.
Step 2: Read them back and put yourself into the feeling of each of them.
Step 3: Now start planning 2016.
I think this approach is so much more impactful than just beating away at all the things we want to happen this year.
See all the cool stuff you did? Give thanks for the year you had no matter what happened. Now, make it even stronger!
Live light,
P.S. Resolutions are a bunch of BS by the way. I'm having a virtual "Vision Workshop" coming up to show you why! Be the first to know about it here.
P.P.S. The 7-Day Breakthrough is done. And it didn’t happen through a resolution (sorry, I just can’t with that word)!

How to make presence your power
Everyone talks about living in the present moment but hardly anyone ever gives you a framework for how to do it.
In this episode, I break down the “6-step presence process” to bring you back to the present moment so you can powerfully create the life you want. Then I’ll give you a 6step challenge to make it real in your life, now!
How to make presence your power
“I can’t do it!”
Ever wondered, “How do I stay in the present moment?”
“All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present. Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry, all forms of fear are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence.”
-Eckhart Tolle
Everyone talks about living in the present moment but hardly anyone ever gives you a framework for how to do it.
In this episode, I break down the “6-step presence process” to bring you back to the present moment so you can powerfully create the life you want. Then I’ll give you a 6-step challenge to make it real in your life, now!
Learn how to make presence your power by listening.
Cause look, you have 60,000-70,000 thoughts a day. 75% of those thoughts are negative and over 50% are the same thoughts you had yesterday.
So here’s how to come back to the present...
1. The roommate starts chattering.
2. Notice that it's there, observe it. Get ready to give your voice a command.
3. Stop it by using this formula:
Hi (insert roommate name), I'm back.
(Now engage your senses:)
4. Take in a deep breath. A long inhale and a long exhale.
5. Look around. Try to notice something new. Is there a picture you've never seen? Are colors jumping out at you?
6. Take in the scent of your environment. What does it smell like?
Why does this work?
Cause it’s a pattern interrupt, that’s replacing the pattern with something new.
Here’s your 6-Step Challenge:
1. Concentrate on this exercise every day for the next week. Set an alarm on your phone multiple times during the day with the title "I'm back." This will force you to remember. The hardest part is developing an awareness around this exercise.
2. Go through the "I'm back" cycle as many times as you need to, whenever you hear the voice.
3. Don't be shocked at how often you're coming back, it's normal.
4. Don't let that inner roommate convince you that this is stupid. It wants you to think it's stupid in the beginning, trust me. Bye. Once you do this enough, the voice will start to slow down and you'll say "I'm back" less and less. Be excited for that day.
5. As the weeks progress, you'll do the exercise less and less because you'll be aware of it more and more. The voice will start to fade but it will always be there, so this practice never really goes away, it just gets easier. Consider it a walking mindfulness meditation exercise.
6. Enjoy your new freedom and life!
In the comments, tell me your story about how this technique brought you back to the present.

Join the gratitude from generations past
I finally captured it…
Have you ever wanted to capture your Grandparents wisdom? Or know what they think about life?
I’m in “Oooooklahoma where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plane…” visiting my girlfriends grandparents.
Join the gratitude from generations past
I finally captured it…
Every Thanksgiving I want to capture all the stories that fly around the dinner table.
Have you ever wanted to capture your Grandparents wisdom? Or know what they think about life?
I’m in “Oooooklahoma where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain…” visiting my girlfriends grandparents.
My girlfriends Grandpa is 94 years old! He’s lived through the great depression, WWII, he’s seen some stuff!
And I realized… I need to capture this, NOW! Watch this video to see how I did it:
I asked him two simple questions:
1. Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your younger self?
2. What decision are you most grateful for in your life?
And then I had my Mom ask my Grandma (they couldn’t stop cracking up).
And then I put their answers into this new SoulFeed episode…
Listen here to learn the wisdom from generations past.
BUT then I thought…
Why don’t I ask you to do the same thing with your loved one!
So this Thanksgiving I have a challenge for you… I want you to record the same two questions with your older loved one and SEND IT TO ME!
It’s super easy? Have a smartphone? Then just hit record in a quiet setting, and send it to me at livelightcoaching@gmail.com
Then I’ll put their answer into this episode and update it! How cool would it be to have an episode chalk full of some of the wisest people around?
So go ahead, get to it! You’ll have a blast and this is a beautiful way to remember them before they’re gone.
Join me on this challenge before the turkeys gone and get the answers to the questions you’ve always wanted to ask…
Live light,
Thanks for listening!

How to use grief to erase hate
A couple nights ago my good friend and video producer lost his life after receiving hateful gay remarks.
It’s hard to believe the kind of hate he experienced still exists in the world. But it does...
And you know what? My natural instinct was to send hate back.
